Smt. Neelkamal was born with music in her being, because she comes from a family where
both her parents were avid patrons of music. She belongs to the class of Jaipur Gharana
singers.
She began lessons with Shri Ashtekar, a well-known teacher of the Bharat Gayan Samaj,
Pune. This was shortlived. Then her studies took real form under the guidance of her
father Shri B.N. Bhide, disciple of late Shri Bapurao Ketkar and late Shri Master
Krishnarao Phulambrikar, who in turn were disciples of Gayanacharya Bhaskarbua Bakhale.
She has had the privilege of being under the tutelage of Shri Manikrao Thakurdas, who also
belongs to the same gharana, and learned more of the "Aprachalit Ragas and
taalas" from this tutor. She also took lessons from Shri D.V. Jadhav for Jaipur
"Asthayi and Antharas".
She has given several successful performances in the past in Gujrat, Rajasthan, Karnataka
and of course Maharashtra, her home-state. For the last 25 years she has been giving
programmes on All India Radio, where she has been an "A" grade artiste.
Though she calls herself as one from the Bhaskarbua Bakhale Gharana, she has styled
herself more in the Jaipur Gharana and this is seen vividly in her performances.
Layabaddha is her predominant choice. But she loves to sing Khayal, while also being well
versed in the niceties of Thumri, Bhajan and Natya Sangeet.Today she is definately the
senior most vocal artist from the Jaipur gharana with spectacular talent.
