Born into the reputed Khaladkar family, the tradition and a deep
sense of music were inherited by Shri Shekhar Suryakant Khaladkar. His natural talent
flowered in the rich musical environment of his family.
Traditionally his family were well known exponents of the Kirana Gharana. His grandfather
Shri. Baburao Khaladkar, is a noted Shehnai player, while his father is a
"Sundari" exponent of repute. Both have received wide recognisation at a
National Level.
Shri Shekhar Khaladkar's initial lessons were from the well known sitarist Ustad Usman
Khan. For further musical education he turned to Ustad Halim Jafar Khan, a student of the
well known artist Jafar Khan Baz. This expert guidance nurtured his growth as a musician.
Today, he is under the guidance of Ustad Shahid Parvez of the Itawa Gharana.
Growth as an artist: For over twenty years Shri Khaladkar has explored different
dimensions as an artist. Along with the sitar, he is also an exponent of
"surbahar." This instrument has deep resonance and is excellent for exploring
and rendering the aalap of any raga.
He has performed widely all over India, including Mumbai, Jaipur, Ajmer, Hyderabad and at
the death anniversary function of Ustad Abdul Karim Khan.
Associated with many prestigious institutions including a brief stint with AIR.
At present he is attached to the Shanta Sangeet Academy in Pune. Here music, both vocal
and instrumental is taught, along with classical dancing is taught in the traditional Guru
Shishya Parampara. Studying under him are 20 talented students.
