Mr. A.B. Herlekar
Assistant General Manager (Personnel)
 'Humanity is my Religion'-
Mr. A.B. Herlekar bid farewell to the Armed Forces to join Walchand Nagar Industries in 1975. He later joined Greaves Ltd as Administration Officer-Security. A Science graduate, he further did L.L.B. and finally got commissioned to serve the Border Security Forces.
Mr. Herlekar developed a liking for HR while he was in contact with people. His interaction in Walchand Nagar Industries and Greaves Ltd., helped him develop an insight into the personnel matters of the organizations. He involved himself in practical training ; learning a lot and handling various legal issues and labour negotiations.
Re-starting an otherwise closed unit in Greaves Ltd. has been one of his major achievements. Not formally trained in Personnel; he has handled domestic enquiries and Corporate responsibilities efficiently. His talent of handling people with compassion accompanied by excellent inter-personal skills, he joined Garware Wall Ropes in the year 1997. Currently working under the portfolio of Assistant General Manager (Personnel) , Mr. Herlekar has brought in sea-changes in the Company.
He has tried to make his office people-oriented; be it staff or employees. Making the organization HR-oriented, he has helped in reducing the gap between the management and employees, reducing communication barriers, making the salary structure employee- friendly and building systems by encouraging cross functionality so that efficiency can be checked. He has also introduced performance appraisal system, fine tuning it to make it performance-oriented.
'Change is one thing which is permanent, one must be flexible and open-minded. Human beings have to struggle for seeing change happen'; He feels that the quality of people and work must improve. A Manager should be a good listener, must talk less and listen with empathy: This way he can perceive the problems, view them and counsel for the same. He strongly feels that HR is being utilized in the right perspective in today's Corporate environment with people realising this change and responding to it positively. There has been a significant change in the focus from Personnel to HR he feels.
Hailing from Karnataka, Mr. Herlekar is in Pune for 23 years now. He likes Pune for its climate and dislikes the pollution and traffic and feels that something must be done about it. Industrial Sector he says has come down, there is more automation, modernization and the Service Industry in the future is going to grow. The traditional culture of Pune is vanishing , it is becoming more of a cosmopolitan city. The new generation is adopting the fast culture. There is more exposure and knowledge to the younger generation today. Youngsters he says have peculiar tastes which he appreciates.
A special bonding with Pune, he feels there is no short-fall here. He loves the culture of Pune, various concerts, cultural happenings , drama, theatre, fine arts and even the heritage of Pune and is proud of being in Pune.
MESSAGE FOR UPCOMING HR PROFESSIONALS:
HR is all about human beings; you have to be humane . Everything else will fall in place. Be a good listener, player, organisor and counsellor.
